Why We Chose Austin

You may be familiar with Austin because you live here or – like many of our clients – from the Austin Game Developers conferences or SXSW or the Austin City Limits music festival.

Imagine traveling here from one of the major airport hubs – dirty, barely lit, with repetitive announcements informing you that the security status is orange. You step off the airplane to an airport with giant windows stretching from floor to ceiling. Natural sunlight rains down as bands take the stage in the center of the terminal, pumping new music through the airport and welcoming you to the live music capital of the world. “Keep Austin Weird” is emblazoned on t-shirts for sale in the stores…and you begin to get it.

Within minutes of your plane landing, you’re looking out the window of your downtown Austin hotel room at the Colorado River running through the center of town. Kayakers, scullers, joggers, dogs and families are enjoying the river park and you decide to join them. You cross the river (only a couple blocks south of our iPhone developer team business offices) just as a huge cloud of bats pours out from under Austin’s Congress bridge. The cloud of bats is so large as it spirals upwards that it darkens the sky and now you know why the joggers and even traffic has stopped. Everyone is enjoying the seasonal spectacle.

You keep walking south along Congress Avenue into “SoCo” – the famed South Congress area of South Austin. Music of all kinds greets you as you pass the eclectic bars and shops. The mood here is festive and happy. The people are layed back and real – so many tattoos, hair colors and so many people who are just…weird and happy and cool in their own unique way. You get a few smiles as you take in the South Austin scene. They know you are starting to get it.

You’re starting to get hungry and realize you’re smelling something delicious coming out of a chic…trailer!?! Chefs from some of Austin’s top five star restaurants have started restaurants run from trailers grouped along the street in “trailer parks.” Each trailer has its own unique style of food. From crazy hot tacos to sushi to kimchi wraps. You end up grabbing a taco at Torchy’s Tacos and really wish your home town had trailer parks like these. You smile a stuffed-mouth smile. You get it – Austin is weird!

More About Me: This was one that I did for myself. I wrote an application for the Palm Pilot that would let it communicate with my Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle’s fuel injection system. I was able to remap and tune the fuel injection with the Palm Pilot while riding the bike. It was interesting for a number of reasons. First of all I had to reverse engineer the data link across RS-232. Then I had to learn to program the Palm Pilot. It was also interesting because I like working with hardware that interacts with real world things that interest me — like motorcycles.

More About Me: While working in NYC, I designed for some of the largest companies in the world and I’m so glad to be back in Austin!
